Arsenal last played in the Champions League back in 2016 where they were brutally knocked out by Bayern Munich in the Round of 16. The Gunners have failed to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League since then and their search still continues.
Arsenal has never been a huge spender in the market. However, in recent years they have had to up their purse in order to be able to compete with the other big clubs in Europe. So much so that the Gunners have spent almost £700 million on transfers once they confirm the signing of £45 million Gabrial Jesus.
Arsenal edge closer to CL as they narrowly missed out on the Top 4 last season
After 2 very difficult years where Arsenal finished 8th in the Premier League, the North-London club are looking set to start competing for the biggest trophies again. Last season, Arsenal were all set to finish 4th only to lose the spot to arch-rivals, Tottenham Hotspurs.
This summer, Arsenal means business. The club have already confirmed the signings of Fabio Viera (€35 million) and Gabriel Jesus (€52 million). The club still remain in the market for more players as they finally aim to end their exile from the Champions League.
Since 2016, the club have spent a lot on players, bringing big names to the Emirates. Some of their most expensive signings since include, Nicolas Pepe (£72m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£57.5m), Ben White (£50m), Alexandre Lacazette (£47.7m) and new signing Gabriel Jesus complete the top 5 with his £45 million moves.
While players like Aubameyang flourished for the Gunners, the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette haven’t really justified their price tag. However, Arsenal’s signings over the last 2 years have surely looked promising.
The club have looked to sign young players with talent and potential overspending huge on big names. This has also helped Mikel Arteta implement a proper system of football that we witnessed last season. Hopefully, Arsenal can justify this huge spending spree by finally bringing Champions League football back to the Emirates.
