“A little bit strange”- Manchester United legend questions Eric Ten Hag’s substitution strategy in the match against Chelsea
Eric Ten Hag and Paul Scholes
In the recent Premier League fixture played between Manchester United and Chelsea, the match ended with an unwanted score settling for both teams 1-1. Former United ace Paul Scholes has his comments about the ‘strange’ subs that were made by the manager Eric Ten Hag.
The former United legend believes that Fred was brought on the field in the place of Jadon Sancho which was strange from the legend’s perspective as the move somehow restricted Bruno Fernandes‘ game control and his passing abilities as the player that came later could not build on the given passes as successfully as Sancho would have.
The much controversial move from Eric Ten Hag to dropping Cristiano Ronaldo was also criticized by many football legends including the former United players who condemned the move from the coach, sighting a personal reference to the game and toward Cristiano instead of judging him on his previous season.
Eric Ten Hag’s relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo
The Portuguese star had his disagreement with the coach over a period of time. Since the start of the Premier League season 2022-23, the player was made to feel like somewhat of a second option to fellow strikers. The player has been provided with the least playing minutes and wasn’t started often.
The differences began when the coach expected a different style of play full of the star and which he tried to put himself in, lacking conviction in the player’s attitude towards the club, Ten Hag decided to cut short the already declining pace of play for the player.
The ongoing disagreement and not having a satisfactory dialogue exchange led to the extreme step from the player when he walked off the stands and refused to get subbed on. The repercussions to which landed the player in a rather questionable position and posted an indirect apology to the club and the coach.
