Mexico is passionate about its football and Mexicans love the sport. Interestingly, they have now developed a unique pitch that sits on top of a volcano. The pitch hosts an amateur football league that involves 10 teams playing in it.

The Mexican region is notoriously volatile as it is home to many volcanoes. It has over 200 extinct volcanoes. Mexico, thus, is located in the world’s most seismic and volcanic region, the Ring of Fire. The inactive Teoca volcano is one of these extinct volcanoes, which hosts the unique football pitch.

The inactive Teoca volcano rises around 8,900 feet above sea level in the Xochimilco, Mexico City district. The football pitch is located on a road that is an 18km trek to the top of the volcano. “The pitch must be about 70 years old, they used to carry me up here when I was a child,” commented the league representative, Joel Becerril.

The area was once a ceremonial center, but after falling into disuse, it was transformed into a football venue. Thus, it hosts the amateur league on a weekend basis. The league has 10 representatives made of players of a variety of professions. “It’s a unique pitch, it’s very nice to come here to distract yourself, to relax, with friends and family,” said 32-year-old player Adrian Garcia, a graphic designer by profession.

Mexico booked their place in the semi-finals of the Gold Cup by defeating Costa Rica 2-0. Goals from Érick Sánchez and Orbelín Pineda secured the win for Mexico. The team will now face Jamaica for a spot in the finals.

Orbeln Pineda scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, and Érick Sánchez scored in the 87th minute. When Kendall Waston rushed into the back of Henry Martin, referee Sad Martnez gave Mexico the penalty. Pineda’s penalty was scored by putting his kick to the left of custodian Kevin Chamorro, who dived in the other direction.

Sánchez joined the game in the 84th minute and scored within minutes.  This was his second international goal of his career. After receiving a cutback pass from Roberto Alvarado, he scored. Mexico will now attempt to win the semi-finals in order to advance to the Gold Cup finals on July 16th.
