Barcelona manager Xavi has revealed that he is unsure whether Frenkie de Jong will still be at the club at the end of the transfer window. Manchester United have agreed on a fee of €85 million for the midfielder, but the deal is being held up due to the Dutchman’s insistence on receiving around €20 million in deferred wages.

Club president Joan Laporta has stated repeatedly that he will do everything in his power to keep De Jong at Camp Nou, despite admitting that this may not be possible. Now, Xavi has confirmed that there are still doubts about De Jong’s future in Catalonia, though his decision to play him as a centre-back is not meant to imply that he is not in the club’s plans.

“I don’t know if he’s [De Jong] going to stay here. There’s still time and a lot of things can still happen,” Xavi said following Barcelona’s 2-0 pre-season win at New York Red Bulls.

“At the moment he’s part of the team, like everyone else. The fact that he played as a central defender in the other games was not a sign that he was leaving. I don’t need to send signals on the pitch. I can speak directly with my footballer,” he added.

While De Jong fights for his unpaid wages, Barcelona has been spending big this summer. Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen joined on free transfers, while Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Jules Kounde signed for hefty fees.

Lionel Messi will be welcome to come back to the Barcelona club, according to manager Xavi Hernandez, if given the chance. Before Barcelona’s pre-season friendly match against NY Red Bulls on Sunday, the Spaniard made this statement.

“I would like Messi’s time at Barcelona not to have ended. I think he deserves a second stage here at FCB. I wish so,” Fabrizio Romano cited Xavi stating. “If the question is whether I would like him to come back? The answer is a resounding yes!”
