The 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup commenced on the 12th of January, 2024 in Qatar, with the home side stepping into the tournament as the defending champions. The tournament was delayed to 2024 keeping in mind the high temperatures in the Middle Eastern nation.

24 teams have been divided into six groups, each consisting of four. The tournament’s final will be held at the Lusail Stadium, located 20 kilometers north of the capital city, Doha, in Qatar. Twenty nations participating in the 2019 edition in the UAE have returned, with Tajikistan making its debut, and Hong Kong returning after a gap of 56 years.

India is the sole representative from the South Asian Football Federation in the AFC Asian Cup, making their fourth appearance in the 2023 edition. The team had a disappointing start, losing 2-0 to Australia on January 13. The Blue Tigers are under the captaincy of veteran forward Sunil Chettri, with Croatian manager Igor Stimac leading the team.

India has been placed in Group B alongside Australia, Syria, and Uzbekistan in the AFC Asian Cup. After a 2-0 loss to Australia in their first match at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, India is scheduled to play against Uzbekistan on January 18 at the same venue.

Subsequently, the Indian team will face Syria in their final group-stage match at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor on January 23. The knockout stages are scheduled to occur from January 28 to February 10.

India and Uzbekistan faced each other eight times, where Uzbekistan secured four wins and two draws, and India won only once.
