After Grant Wahl, another journalist dies in Qatar while covering 2022 FIFA World Cup

Al Misslam’s death was made public this past Sunday following American writer Grant Wahl, who was the first journalist to die while covering the World Cup in Qatar, a nation that has frequently come under scrutiny for its opposition to LGBTQ+ rights and other problems. La Gazzetta reports that the circumstances of the unfortunate incident are currently unknown.

Photojournalist Khalid Al Misslam worked for the Qatari network Al Kass TV. There hasn’t been any more information made public regarding Al Misslam’s passing on Saturday. The family received a social media message of sympathy from The Gulf Times, a Qatari news source.

This incident took place a matter of hours after Grant Wahl’s passing. US Soccer announced on Friday, December 9 that the American journalist had passed away while covering the World Cup. According to early reports, Wahl was covering Argentina vs. Netherlands game at Lusail Stadium. So far, two fatalities from the World Cup in Qatar have been reported in the media and both happened a short while apart.

Grant Wahl, before heading to Qatar was very clear about his opposition towards the Qatar FIFA World Cup. The US journalist, as a sign of protest, during the group stage of the tournament decided to show up with a t-shirt representing the LGBTQ community. After the journalist decided to breach Qatar’s rules, he was also detained.

While covering the quarter-final game between Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Van Dijk’s Netherlands, the journalist reportedly collapsed in Doha. Given his brief dispute with the authorities last month, rumors of the Qatari officials’ foul play behind this mysterious death have increased.

To add to this suspicion, Grant Wahl’s brother, Eric Wahl, posted an Instagram video where he suggests foul play behind the death of the journalist. he said, “I am Grant Wahl’s brother. I’m gay. I’m the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed. And I just beg for any help.”
