“After the Clasico, some people celebrated as if they had won the title”- Thibaut Courtois takes a dig at Barcelona after Real Madrid wins its 35th La Liga title

Real Madrid conquered their 35th La Liga title with their 4-0 win against Espanyol with two goals from Rodrygo and one each from Benzema and Asensio sealing their victory.

This is seen as an impressive feat from the Los Blancos with four matches still remaining after their crushing defeat against El Clasico rivals Barcelona at the end of March. After that El Clasico match, Real Madrid went on to win all their league matches to seal the title.

Speaking after their triumph, Courtois had some subtle words for their arch-nemesis. He took a dig at the Catalan side and stated that after beating Real Madrid, the Barcelona players and coaching staff celebrated as if they had won the league.

“After the Clasico was the key, some people celebrated as if they had won the title, that they were back. But we kept calm to beat Celta and in a difficult game and Getafe, which is always difficult for us,” said Courtois.

Courtois also spoke about how this triumph was more a team performance than some players’ individual brilliance.

“This is the work of the whole team, We all attack and defend. The game against Sevilla was the key, coming back from 2-0 down when everyone thought we were dead and that killed our opponents a bit,” added the Belgian star.

After capturing La Liga, Real Madrid is now eyeing its 14th Champions League title

Real Madrid has already won two trophies this season. However, they are still fighting for securing a Champions League trophy- a glory that the Los Blancos have not achieved since 2018- the same year in which Cristiano Ronaldo left the club.

Real Madrid will face Manchester City in the second leg of the Champions League 2021-22 semi-finals on Wednesday. Currently trailing 3-4 against the Cityzens, it will be intriguing to see if the men in white will be able to turn the tables upside down at their home or not.
