AFC Ajax have had quite the fall from grace this season. The side who have won Eredivisie a record 36 times now find themselves 5th in the league. Their season went from bad to worse, when a shocking defeat in the KNVB Cup (Dutch Cup) against USV Hercules made headlines. More surprisingly, Hercules are a 4th-division amateur side, against which Ajax have never suffered defeat in the competition.
Disaster struck the Dutch side when Ajax found themselves trailing 2-0 in the 66th minute. Even though Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom brought their side level, Ajax could not escape one of the worst defeats in their history. A goal from Mats Grotenbreg at 90+3′ sealed Ajax’s fate.
The defeat came as a shock to football fans worldwide, as Ajax are nowhere close to league toppers PSV as well. The club was without head coach John van ‘t Schip against Hercules, as the gaffer was in Australia for his son’s wedding.
Moreover, this is the first time in Ajax’s history that they have lost to an amateur side in the KNVB Cup in their previous 29 meetings.
Fans react to Ajax’s historic loss at the hands of an amateur club
The 2019 UEFA Champions League semi-finalists have been unrecognizable this season. A loss against 4th division side USV Hercules triggered a landslide of trolls and reactions on social media, with many in disbelief of the team’s current state. Some are convinced that the club aren’t touching their glory days any time soon, while others are praying for a comeback.
A fan commented that the club is bound to get relegated this season. Even though the analysis may be a bit harsh and far-fetched, the reality is that Ajax are nowhere near their best. Some, however, were not as critical of the club. A comment read that anything can happen in football, even the most unexpected of things. Another was quick to bring in some wordplay, stating that Hercules turned up with a ‘Herculean’ effort. Here are some of the fans’ reactions:
Some mocked the club’s decision to bring out a statement against the European Super League. A fan said that a small club like Ajax had no business concerning themselves with the Super League. Popular Twitter page and Ajax supporter @TheEuropeanLad was heavily trolled in the comments. Some also expressed their amusement at how a 4th division amateur side could boast such a massive stadium. Ajax now face Go Ahead Eagles in Eredivisie on 14th January.
