The iconic Dutch club, Ajax is off to its worst-ever start to an Eredivisie campaign. They’re in a crisis, trying to avoid relegation after a humiliating 2-1 loss to AZ Alkmaar, which puts them in 16th place.
This once-mighty team, with a record 36 Eredivisie titles, is now facing a serious challenge. Their recent poor performance has worsened their situation. The Dutch ‘giants’ have won just one game in the first 6 league games. Further, with 3 defeats and 2 draws they have just managed to accumulate 5 points from a possible 18. Shambolic to be calling them a Dutch giant.
But there’s shock amongst the football supporters for a reason. Ajax was in one of the Champions League‘s memorable runs as an underdog in the 2018/19 season. The club went as far as the semi-finals, defeating the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid en route. It was a fairytale run for all the football fans. Now, 4 years hence, they are in a danger zone in the league that they have been dominating for years. That is shocking, but this is how quickly the scenario can change in this sport.
Ajax now has to get buckled up and fight back to rise the ladder. The fans and supporters of the club are hoping for a miraculous turnover of the scenario and eagerly awaiting one of the greatest comebacks in the Eredivisie.

Ajax boss Maurice Steijn is under severe pressure
Maurice Steijn, Ajax’s head coach and manager is now under immense pressure from the fans and club management’s attempt to find their true form in the game. After four humiliating losses in the last seven games without a single win, in all competitions, the club’s management is concerned about the managerial role. Their last loss against the AZ Alkmaar just added to their woes.
Steijn was appointed at the start of the 2023/24 campaign with many high hopes and expectations. However, recently, it has been evident that the team is even struggling to find their usual form only. Internal discussions are going on about the crucial decision. Many experts and fans believe that it took someone special to follow Erik ten Hag‘s greatness at the club. Steijn succumbed to that much pressure.
Ajax has been filled with rich historical feats and excellence in European competition. As of now the football world eagerly awaits updates on the current situation and anticipates how the club responds. Meanwhile, the Dutch fans who have been following Eredivisie for years believe there is a comeback written for ‘de Godenzonen’ (Sons of the Gods).
