In the midst of a rough season, Ajax club management has decided to fire head coach Maurice Steijn. He was brought in on a three-year contract but mutually parted ways after just 3 months due to poor performance. Winning only 2 out of 11 games, the club now sits 17th in the League, just one spot above the bottom.

Ajax is facing one of its worst-ever starts to a season, with both players and management struggling to deliver results. Additionally, fans are highly dissatisfied with the team’s performances, leading to protests and even breaking into the club facilities just weeks ago.

Ajax and Maurice Steijn will part ways with immediate effect. The club management and Steijn have agreed that the coach will step down from his position.

Subsequently, the Chief Executive of the club Jan van Halst announced:

We have worked intensely and professionally together over the last few months. But the sporting results and the development of the team were lagging behind. Maurice indicated that he was having doubts about his position and whether he was the right man for the job.

Erik ten Hag led the club to a three-peat of the Eredivisie titles before leaving for Machester United. Now, Steijn is the second coach to be sacked after Ten Hag’s departure.

Ajax have parted ways with Maurice Steijn after just 3 months in charge. The Dutchman said, “It’s a terrible shame,” and that he did everything to bring back the club to ‘where it belongs’. However, he admitted failure and has left his position as head coach. As per reports, Hedwiges Maduro is set to take charge as the interim head coach.

Maduro, a former Ajax player and staff member, might be replaced by John van ‘t Schip. Maduro, who has 270+ appearances at Ajax, served as assistant and interim coach. He also coached the Greece National Team until 2021.

Ajax, facing their worst start ever under Steijn (winning only 18% of games), is considering Mitchell van der Gaag. However, Ten Hag’s Manchester United assistant is unlikely to return. Ajax needs a quick turnaround to avoid relegation.
