Ajax will earn £50000 for every appearance Manchester United new signing Lisandro Martinez makes next season: Reports

Manchester United have already spent nearly £50 million/€60 million to sign Argentina’s Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. Manchester United beat Arsenal to the signing of Martinez, but they had to pay a high price for the privilege.

While Martinez is thrilled to be reunited with his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, United simply outbid Arsenal, with their €55 million fee including more than €10 million in add-ons.

According to various news outlets, Ajax will have no trouble raising the additional funds. It is based on performance, and there are no restrictions on the number of minutes Martinez must play per game.

Martinez will have to pay Ajax £50,000 every time he plays, up to a maximum of 30 games per season over the course of his five-year contract, even if he just comes off the bench. If Martinez becomes a first-team regular, this should amount to around €2 million per season.

Where will Lisandro Martinez play at Manchester United?

Martinez is a left-footed centre-back whose preferred position is the same as club captain Harry Maguire’s; to the left of a central defensive partnership but Ten Hag prefers his defenders to play on their natural side, so Maguire, who is right-footed, could easily nudge over to accommodate Martinez.

Martinez can also play left-back or defensive midfield, but despite his 5’9″ frame, he is most effective in the centre of defence. Last season, he was in the Eredivisie’s 99th percentile for tackles and progressive passes, completing three of the former and eight of the latter per 90 minutes played.

Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, and Eric Bailly are also on the books at United, though Bailly has been linked with a move to Roma, where the manager who signed him for United, Jose Mourinho, is the coach.
