There are animated touchline reactions and then there’s this. 10-man Real Madrid grabbed a late 90+2′ winner against Deportivo Alavés on Thursday. It remains safe to say that Alaves coach Luis Garcia was not ‘pleased’ with the late blow. While Real Madrid players were busy celebrating Lucas Vazquez‘s goal, Garcia was writhing in agony. 16th placed Alavés were in touching distance of a point when Real grabbed the late winner to go top of La Liga on Christmas.

With the win against Alaves, Madrid now has 45 points in 18 games and are level on points with Girona. They lead the table thanks to a superior goal difference. Los Blancos head coach Carlo Ancelotti was not pleased with Nacho’s red card. Ancelotti said that the referee saw it as a yellow, but VAR saw it as a red. However, he was quick to praise the team’s resilience and energy for not “slipping up” after the red card.

Alaves coach Luis Garcia was seen livid on the touchline after Vazquez’s late goal. He started by furiously kicking away a bottle before picking up and throwing the stand. Garcia then proceeded to scream at the bench and pulled a staff member by the jacket in frustration.

Subsequently, he took off both his coat and beanie and launched them to the ground. He then proceeded to take his seat in the dugout, but not before rocking the chair violently and stomping the ground in anger. His reactions have since gone viral on social media.

Real Madrid plotting for Raphael Varane’s return amidst injury crisis in defense

Real Madrid is at a loss for options in defense. Los Blancos find themselves with just 2 first-team players in defense. Both Eder Militao and David Alaba have been ruled out for the foreseeable future after picking up ACL injuries. Ancelotti is left with the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Nacho, who are the only remaining defenders in the team.

The Italian has also been forced to deploy the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga to fill in at the back. It is understood that Real Madrid have shifted their attention to former player Raphael Varane to ‘rescue’ them from this injury crisis. The Frenchman enjoyed a successful decade at the club, winning 18 trophies before parting with the club to join Manchester United in 2021.

Varane joined United for a £34 million fee but has been playing second fiddle to the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. United are also looking to offload players in the upcoming transfer window with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek departing. Nacho’s recent red card means that Ancelotti will be tasked with the headache of deploying a non-central defender at center-back. Varane’s contact with United goes until 2024, with an option to extend for one year.
