Alex Morgan has given her first statement since USWNT’s exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was heavily disappointed with the team’s performance and hasn’t quite moved on from it yet. They were considered the favorites when they entered the tournament. They won the last two editions of it in 2015 and 2019. Thus, everyone put them at the top of all teams when making predictions for it.
This heightened the expectations of the supporters who thought that they would become the first team in history to win three World Cups in a row. But it was not to be. Doubts started being raised during the very start of the tournament when USWNT gave very underwhelming performances. While they defeated Vietnam 3-0, they ended up drawing to the Netherlands and Portugal.
Had they lost against Portugal, they would have exited the tournament in the group stages itself. Portugal had the chance to do just that in the 92nd minute. Ana Capeta hit a chance straight at the post. Instead, they got eliminated by Sweden in the last of 16 in the penalty shootout. Morgan who was devastated took to Instagram to share her thoughts.
Another reminder that we compete because we want to be the best and measure ourselves against the top in the world. This time, we came up short. We know that and I own that. I’m so proud of the effort, the fight, and the belief of this group. I stand by each and every one of these players and reaffirm that we poured everything into this World Cup.Alex Morgan said.
She also said that the exit will serve as the defining moment of the future of USWNT.
Alex Morgan on retirement
The USWNT star, Alex Morgan also talked about her plan of hanging up her boots. This comes after Megan Rapinoe announced her decision to retire from the game.
She said, “I’m not planning to hang up my boots anytime soon. Right now it’s just one day at a time now.” Morgan is still one of the finest strikers present today in the women’s game.
If she announces retirement it would heavily hurt the team. Thus, for now, for the sake of USWNT, she shouldn’t entertain plans of calling it a day. However, this may still be her last World Cup appearance. She is unlikely to stick around till 2027.
