World Cup winner Alexia Putellas added yet another accolade to her name. The 29-year-old midfielder has been at the club for the past 11 years. She has won multiple Champions League, Copa de la Reina, and Primera División titles. Moreover, her tenure as Barcelona’s captain has been a resounding success. Her goal against Atletico Madrid on the 15th saw her clinch yet another record.
Putellas overtook former club teammate and International compatriot, Jenni Hermoso. Her 182nd goal for the club places her on the top of all-time leading goal scorers for the club. The goal against Atletico Madrid came in the 51st minute when Putellas slotted home a low cross from Patricia Guijarro. The strike marked Alexia’s 3rd goal of the season.
Putellas has scored 182 goals for the club. This tally is comprised of 131 in the league, 19 in the Champions League, and 20 in the Copa de la Reina. The record previously held by Jenni Hermoso has been standing for the last 3 years, since 2020.
Moreover, she is the record holder for most appearances for the National team. Additionally, she is also the current Ballon d’Or winner.
Barcelona Femeni triumphed over Atletico Madrid thanks to a historic goal
Barcelona Femeni retained their position as table toppers, thanks to a win against Atletico. The Blaugrana had their work cut out for them in Madrid. In a tight encounter, Alexia Putellas scored the only goal in a close 1-0 away win. Atletico had just one defeat in their last 9 games. Therefore, coming home with all 3 points was no simple task.
Putellas’ record-breaking 182nd goal gave the away side the lead, early into the first half. In a swift move by Barcà, the solid Atletico defense came undone. A brilliant through ball by Esmee Brugts found Patricia Guijarro. The midfielder teed up a rushing Alexia Putellas who made no mistake in finishing the ball past Atletico Madrid keeper Lola Gallardo.
In spite of the goal, the home side stood firm against Barcelona’s attacks. Dominating possession and attacks failed to materialize on the scoreboard. Catalina Coll stood firm when she found herself in a 1v1 against Sheila Guijarro. The win meant Barcelona enjoyed back-to-back wins, against Real Sociedad and Atletico. The club has 15 points in 5 games.
