At the Colo-Colo stadium I was sitting stretching and excrement from ourselves in the shower came out of the drain.

The Chilean national team failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups even after impressive performances at the regional level, and are already struggling in their quest to reach the 2026 World Cup to be held in the USA and Mexico. The team is sitting eighth in the ten-team group, and have just won one out of their first five matches, beating Peru 2-0 in October this year.

The top five teams in the group directly qualify for the World Cup, with Argentina leading. The sixth-placed team gets a shot through an inter-confederation playoff. Despite winning consecutive Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016, Chile faces challenges, currently ranking eighth in World Cup Qualifying, ahead of Bolivia and Peru.

Following Chile’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, Eduardo Berizzo, an Argentine, became the head coach in May 2022. Struggling, he only secured one win against Peru in October. Berizzo is the third coach to depart as Chile grapples with issues. After Berizzo’s exit, Nicolas Cordova, the youth team head coach, became the interim head coach. He led Chile in the recent match against Ecuador.
