Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon becomes the latest European honcho to get a lucrative offer to join the Saudi Pro League. The 45-year-old Italian goalkeeping legend allegedly received a €15 million-a-year deal to join Saudi top guns Al Hilal. Buffon is currently playing at his boyhood club Parma in the second tier of Italian football.
According to the Italian news outlet Gazzetta, Buffon has received a lucrative €15 million a year offer from an unnamed Saudi Arabian Club. The offer is reportedly for two seasons. While on the face, the offer might sound tiny compared to the ones Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema or N’Golo Kante received but when put in context, this offer sounds equally unbelievable. Buffon earns €27,000 pounds at Parma as their goalkeeper which amounts to a meager €1.4 million annually. so, this offer will increase his earnings close to 11 times.
Although 45, Buffon is currently the captain of his boyhood side. The veteran goalkeeper suffered a hamstring injury last season. But he came back and took the No. 1 spot in the team this season. Buffon has so far made 17 appearances this season for the Serie B side as the team played the league’s play-offs which they, unfortunately, lost to Cagliari.
Buffon still has a year left in his contract with Parma. And the player is reportedly thinking about his next move in his career. He has the option to hang his boots or complete the contract with the club. Or he might be tempted to take up the offer from the Saudi Arabian club.
In case he chooses to accept the offer, Buffon would reportedly become the latest edition of the top stars who joined the league this transfer window. The Saudi Arabian clubs have attracted a few of the top talents and stars to their league with lucrative offers. Players like Karim Benzema, N’golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Neves, etc have all moved to the Saudi Pro League ahead of the new season so far.

Hakim Ziyech’s move to Saudi Club Al Nassr collapsed following failed medicals
Chelsea‘s Algerian winger Hakim Ziyech’s move to Al Nassr was off after discovering a knee problem during his medicals. He was one of the top targets of the Saudi side who looked to partner him with the Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo at the club.
Ziyech was all set to make a £8 million move to Al Nassr. Talks were all done and sealed between all the parties. But the medicals showed that the player had a problem with his knees which took the deal sideways and hence it collapsed.
The Moroccan international joined Chelsea from Ajax for £33m from Ajax in 2020. He made 24 appearances last season. But in most of those he didn’t start but came off the bench. The player showed sparks of his potential in his first season at the club. But he soon fell off the pecking order.
Recently turned 30, the wideman has been trying to leave Chelsea and start fresh but it isn’t happening as planned. Last time in January he faced a similar situation. A loan move to the current Ligue 1 Champions Paris Saint Germain was imminent for the player. But at the last hours of the transfer window, the deal collapsed due to administrative errors from the Chelsea side.
Ziyech still has two years left in his current contract with Chelsea. But it seems that the player would want a plan out pf the club as soon as possible as he thinks his days at the club are not going to get him his desired game time.
