All you need to know about Barcelona’s multi-million dollar deal with Spotify
On March 15, 2022, Barcelona announced that Spotify will become the club’s main sponsor this summer and the deal will last until the end of the 2025/26 season, but had to be first ratified on Sunday, April 3, in an EGM. With the deal now ratified by stakeholders, the Blaugrana hierarchy is delighted to raise the curtain on a new era at Camp Nou.
The four-year contract, which kicks in from the 2022/23 campaign, sees Spotify designated as Barca’s main partner, handing it front-of-shirt branding for the men’s and women’s teams. The company will also sponsor the club’s training shirts for the next three seasons.
For the first time in Barca’s history, the deal will also see their iconic stadium rebranded, taking on the name of ‘Spotify Camp Nou’.
Financial terms of the deal between Barcelona and Spotify
Various Spanish outlets have pegged the value of the deal at about €280 million (US$308 million), equating to €70 million (US$76.9 million) per year. The brand will appear in front of both the men’s and women’s shirts, as well as their training kits, with Spotify also acquiring the naming rights to the Camp Nou.
Barcelona will also earn 5m euros for each of the three years as a result of Spotify’s sponsorship of their training kit. Meanwhile, as Spotify has earned the naming rights to Camp Nou, Barcelona will earn five million euros each season until the Espai Barça works are completed.
The Espai Project is Barcelona’s attempt to move the club’s facilities into the 21st century by building the biggest sports innovation hub in the world on the site of the current Camp Nou. After completion of the project, they will earn 20m euros each season for the remaining eight years of the contract
Barcelona is set to receive an additional €400m cash injection from Spotify
Messi’s deal expired in 2021, and he joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer as Barcelona couldn’t offer the jewel in their crown a new deal. However, such issues could be about to end as Barca Universal has reported that the club has begun discussions over selling 49% Barça Licensing and Merchandising for €200 million over a 10 year period,
While Mundo Deportivo has reported that Blaugrana has also sped up the process of selling a maximum of 49% of Barça Studios. Again, the club is hoping to make €200m from this sale to make a combined total of an additional €400m.
