“What’s his excuse?” – Fans slam Andre Onana’s ‘DISRESPECTFUL’ late arrival for Cameroon’s AFCON match, Echo Emmanuel Adebayor’s critique

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been in the news, a significant reason being his errors in front of goal. However, as Cameroon kicked off their AFCON campaign with a 1-1 draw against Guinea, the team’s #23 stayed on the bench. Following the incident, Onana has been subject to harsh criticism from fans and player(s) alike. Many, including Emmanuel Adebayor, have slammed the United keeper for his late arrival at the Cameroonian camp.

Onana attempted a marvelous feat by playing for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur in their 2-2 draw on Sunday. His original plan was to report to the camp within just 23 hours of the United game. However, the player’s flight was delayed, which saw him sit out Cameroon’s opening game. A certain former Arsenal player took offense at Onana’s actions and publicly hit out against the star.

Emmanuel Adebayor, former Cameroon and Arsenal striker said,

Onana did not respect Cameron. Even being the most important player in my selection, I never did something like this (arrive on the day of the match). The fact that it still happens shows that there is something wrong with the federation.

Adebayor also said that Onana’s actions now propose a risk of losing big and that he has alienated several supporters as well as teammates.

Fans LASH OUT against Andre Onana for prioritizing Manchester United over Cameroon

Onana’s decision to prioritize club football ahead of his nation’s AFCON opener is only a small part of his ongoing controversy with the National team. The player infamously announced his retirement from the team back in 2022 after a rift with then-manager Rigobert Song on his style of play. That being said, Onana’s most recent decision has not sat well with fans who agree with Adebayor’s critique.

A fan said that this is disrespectful to Cameroon and also disrespectful to Manchester United. He conceded two goals before leaving the United camp as well. Many trolled Onana for trying to do two things at both, and somehow failing at both of them. Some angry fans said that the federation should have sent him back the moment he arrived late and not entertained such players.

Another supporter said that Onana isn’t as important as the player thinks he is. However, Emmanuel Adebayor’s controversial past meant that he was also mocked for making such a claim. One fan recalled there being an ‘agreement’ between United and Cameroon for the same. With a draw in their opening game, Cameroon are now second in their group and will face Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Friday.
