Another Chelsea superstar expected to miss 2022 FIFA World Cup after Reece James: Reports
N'Golo Kante
The FIFA World Cup in Qatar this winter will be missed by N’Golo Kante. The Athletic reports that the 31-year-old France international, who is frequently one of the first names on Didier Deschamps’ squad sheet, has been sidelined for about three months after suffering a new setback in Chelsea training.
Kante appeared to be on the upswing after making his hamstring injury comeback last week. Graham Potter, the manager of Chelsea, has acknowledged that the Frenchman’s situation is “not good news” and that he would check with a doctor this weekend to determine the extent of the damage.
“He’s due to see a consultant at the weekend,” Potter said on Friday. “It’s a setback, it’s not good news, but I can’t give you anything more at this stage.
“Historically there are things which have happened which is a concern, so we need to get to the bottom of that.
“It’s a setback at this stage of this rehab which is worrying, but all we can do is get the right diagnosis, get the right consultation, and try and help him get back to full fitness and enjoying his football.”
N’Golo Kante hasn’t played for Chelsea since suffering an injury against Spurs in August
Didier Deschamps, the manager of France, will be saddened by the availability of Kante. After Kante was instrumental in both their World Cup-winning campaign in 2018 and their victory at the European Championship the previous summer, he listed Kante as the first name on his team sheet that year.
“The midfielder works in the shadows,” Deschamps told El Pais in June 2021. “He is not given media attention because he is not ‘decisive’. From time to time, lights get shone on them. That is the case for Kante now.

“He is above all the first player that his team-mates pick for their teams in training. And he is the first name that a coach, a national team manager, notes down when he is deciding his starting XI.”
The Athletic and French publication L’Equipe have both reported on Kante’s injury, and both sources have confirmed that Kante won’t be competing in this year’s World Cup. On November 9, Deschamps will release his official roster for the competition. On November 22, Les Bleus will face Australia in their World Cup debut before going up against Denmark and Tunisia in Group D.
