A few weeks ago, Mainz 05 star Anwar El Ghazi posted an Instagram story with pro-Palestinian messages. Following the incident, the 28-year-old was sanctioned by his club. The team immediately contacted the player, asking him to delete the same. He followed suit. However, the club later announced that his post was ‘unacceptable’ and that the club is distancing itself from the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

Even though the extent of suspension was not clear initially, recent reports are damning. The player has refused to apologize for the pro-Palestinian post on his Instagram. Now, sources close to the developments suggest that Mainz could take the extreme step of terminating El Ghazi’s contract just a month after getting his deal done permanently. But it could be met with a huge backlash from fans and supporters. Similar to how it was seen earlier with the football fans raging over the club’s statement ‘to talk with the player’.

After a meeting on Thursday, the club has reportedly decided to terminate El Ghazi’s contract which goes until 2025. But there is an official confirmation yet to come. Meanwhile, following the meeting the club announced that El Ghazi told the club officials:

He stands for peace and humanity for all victims of the war.

His latest post reads:

I would like to make clear that I stand for peace and humanity for all.

As per the BBC, the player’s club is yet to confirm the termination. German labor law allows a 14-day window to fire someone for serious misconduct, or they must pay the full contract if they miss the deadline.

Manor Solomon posts controversial Instagram story

New Tottenham Hotspur signing Manor Solomon posted a controversial Instagram story related to the recent bombing of the Baptist Hospital in Gaza. The player has posted stories that read: ‘Hamas is responsible for bombing their people and blaming Israel for it’.

This caused a massive stir on social media, as fans pointed out how several ‘Muslim’ players were suspended or terminated for posting stories and images in support of Palestine. Anwar El Ghazi of Mainz and Noussair Mazraoui of Bayern Munich are just a few. Numerous fans called for the suspension of the player, while others pointed out the hypocrisy of clubs towards the issue.

Several fans turned up for the Tottenham Hotspur game with banners in support of the player. “We support Manor,” read several signboards during the Fulham game.

Meanwhile, players face sanctions and suspensions for their pro-Palestine posts. So, fans on Twitter and social media are calling for a ‘blanket’ rule or guidelines for the ongoing situation while consistently avoiding any hypocrisy.
