Fans were left astonished after an Arab commentator sang Shakira‘s iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup song ‘Waka Waka’ during South Africa’s victory over Cape Verde in the quarter-finals of the AFCON. South Africa won on penalties (2-1) to reach the semi-finals.
The quarter-final clash was a gripping encounter, concluding 0-0 even after extra time. The two sides played out a hard-fought draw which saw 41 shots taken, but the results were to be decided on penalties. South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the player of the match, saving four penalties against Cape Verde. The winning side will now face Nigeria in the semi-finals, marking their first appearance since 2000.
Arabic commentator surprised everyone by singing the iconic ‘Waka Waka’ song from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, during Cape Verde’s last spot-kick against South Africa, which was being taken by Patrick Andrade. The incident took place on the live broadcast of the game on BeIN Sports.
The Arabic commentator added his rendition of the song as the South African goalkeeper saved the penalty. Subsequently, securing a semi-final spot for the team. The popular song was originally sung in 2010 by Colombian pop star, Gerard Pique‘s ex, Shakira, and gained widespread popularity.
However, this is not the first instance of the Arabic commentators singing on live broadcasting of a match. There have been several instances like the one singing Jax Jones’ ‘You Don’t Know Me’ during Everton‘s defeat to Fulham in the Carabao Cup, earlier this season.

Fans and internet users reacted to Arabic commentator Mohamed Barakat singing Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’ song, during the penalty shoot-out between South Africa and Cape Verde, in the quarter-finals of the AFCON.
Some fans claimed that the South African goalkeeper resembled the legendary AC Milan shot-stopper Dida, during the penalty shootout. Another fan humorously suggested that the song was a remix, playfully labeling the commentator as ‘Shakuru, similar to Shakira’s name.
