Cristiano Ronaldo in action against Switzerland

Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, will battle Switzerland on Wednesday in Round 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022. In anticipation of the matchup, a Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola poll, unveiled an unexpected result. The survey showed that most local supporters do not wish Ronaldo to be part of the starting lineup.

Ronaldo might have been a polarizing figure around the globe, but he always had the backing of his homeland. However, in this World Cup, things have changed slightly. Initially, sports journalists began to doubt him and pick him apart, and now the fans have followed suit.

The survey in which they asked fans if they thought Cristiano Ronaldo should maintain his role on the National Team. Several comments were showcased in the newspaper, one of which read: “What is the rationale behind him being a starter? He wasn’t a starter at the club, he’s not in good condition, he says he wants to compete for titles, however every seven days he’s sick, he doesn’t want to practice, no matter the excuse. It’s incredibly rude, something I’ve never seen!”

Reports in Spain indicate that Cristiano Ronaldo will head to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Nassr in 2023. This would be the first time in his career that Ronaldo would play club football outside of Europe. It appears that negotiations were nearly finished at the end of December.

According to Marca, a Spanish publication, a €200million (£172m) deal for the Portuguese star is finalized. The agreement will span two years, with the first year earning the athlete €100m (£86m) and additional advertising and sponsorship money boosting his wages to a record-breaking amount and making him the top-paid athlete in sports. If the agreement is ratified, Ronaldo is not interested in accumulating more accolades after claiming the Champions League five times, the Premier League three times, La Liga and Serie A twice each, and multiple championships.

Speculation has been rampant that Ronaldo may return to Sporting Lisbon, the team where he began his professional career, ever since he was benched by Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hag. Reports have been circulating of a potential homecoming for the legendary footballer.
