Arsenal explore the opportunity to sign Barcelona attacker Antonie Griezmann in January: Reports

According to the Spanish newspaper Fichajes, Arsenal is planning a move to capture Barcelona forward Antonie Griezmann in the January transfer window next year. The France international is now on a season-long loan to Atletico Madrid. However, Atletico will have to spend €40 million to permanently acquire the player if he plays more than 30 minutes in at least 50% of their games this season.

Griezmann feels quite insecure about this specific clause in his contract, which is why he wanted to switch clubs before the November FIFA World Cup. If the Gunners make a move for the Barcelona star this summer, that is yet to be seen.

Griezmann has played 29 minutes in both of his two league games this month under manager Diego Simeone. This demonstrates that the La Liga giants are unwilling to exercise his contract’s buy-out option next summer. Because of this, Barca would find themselves in a precarious situation.

It would be sensible for Atletico to make a decision this summer itself if Griezmann does not meet the requirements for them to spend €40 million for him. By doing this, they may make sure they are paid for selling the former Real Sociedad player rather than letting him finish out his contract. In 2024, his current contract at Camp Nou will expire.

Why are Arsenal interested in Barcelona outcast Antonie Griezmann?

Due to his extreme versatility, Antoine Griezmann can play almost anywhere in the frontline with great ease. When choosing his starting lineup each week, manager Mikel Arteta would have a wide range of possibilities because of this amount of freedom. After losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona in January, Alexandre Lacazette left Arsenal for Olympique de Lyonnais this summer.

To fill that gap, Arteta signed Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, but he would be wise to consider adding another talented forward. On August 15, following Atletico’s opening-day victory in La Liga, manager Diego Simeone hailed Griezmann’s adaptability. The Frenchman scored the final goal in Atletico’s 3-0 victory at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez while playing as an attacking midfielder.
