Seven years ago was the last time Arsenal had played in the Champions League. They reached the Round of 16 and faced Bayern Munich. What followed was one of the biggest thrashings in the history of the tournament, as Arsenal lost the tie 10-2 across two legs.
Now Arsenal have finally reached the Champions League quarter-finals after 14 years, beating Porto in a thrilling penalty shootout. On 15th March, the draw for the quarter-finals took place and unfortunately for the Gunners, they were once again drawn to Bayern Munich.
Arsenal will be hosting the first leg of the draw, and the 2nd leg will be played in the Allianz Arena. The last time they played each other, both legs were won by Bayern with the score line of 5-1. Now Arsenal will try to prove they are not the same team from seven years ago.
Along with that, Harry Kane would be returning to North London. The striker used to play for Arsenal’s biggest rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, before making the shift to Bavaria. He also used to be a part of Hale End, Arsenal’s academy. He was released when he was 9 for being “chubby” and “unathletic” according to Liam Brady.
Arsenal fans await Bayern Munich challenge
Many Arsenal fans on social media were excited to face Bayern Munich, now that the team has improved. Many spammed the statement, “Pray for Bayern,” while rival fans mocked Arsenal. They referenced the beating Arsenal had gotten seven years ago, expecting the same to happen again. Some wanted Harry Kane to lose, hoping the England star striker wouldn’t win a trophy.
Check out some of the fan reactions:
Whoever wins this draw will be facing Manchester City or Real Madrid, hosting the first leg. Munich fans won’t be allowed inside the Emirates Stadium. They had received a ban by UEFA after their fans threw a flare on the field while playing Lazio. This means the 61k-capacity stadium can be filled up with Gooners.
Arsenal are currently top of their league, tied on points with Liverpool but ahead on goal difference. They are out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, with the UCL and PL being their only chances at silverware. Meanwhile, Bayern are not their usual selves. They are 10 points behind Bayer Leverkusen and could miss out on the league title for the first time since 2012. They were also knocked out by Saarbrucken in the DFB-Pokal.
