Frenkie de Jong
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, earlier this week, Manchester United opened talks with Barcelona to sign Frenkie de Jong as part of their Summer rebuild under new boss, Eric ten Haag. The duo worked together at Ajax and de Jong is on top of ten Hag’s wishlist. However, United won’t find it easy with rivals, Arsenal is also in the race to sign the talented Dutch midfielder.
Arsenal enjoyed a stellar season under Mikel Arteta but just missed out on the Champions League spot to their arch-rivals, Tottenham Hotspurs. Frenkie de Jong insistent on staying at Barcelona despite interest from Arsenal and Manchester United
While both Arsenal and Manchester United want Frenkie de Jong, they cannot offer the player what he really wants. And that is Champions League football. Both Manchester United and Arsenal will be playing in the Europa League next season.
Moreover, de Jong seems to be happy with Xavi and wants to continue at Camp Nou as well. The star has been Xavi’s first-choice midfielder and has been flourishing under the Spaniard. Hence, it will be difficult negation for the English clubs.
Manchester United believes that Eric ten Haag can convince Frenkie de Jong to sign with the Red Devils. On the other hand, Arsenal while still in the race doesn’t have Frenkie as their priority.
In fact, Mikel Arteta has asked the Arsenal board to sign Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans. The Belgian midfielder has been impressive for the foxes and has made it clear that he wants to leave to find a new challenge. Tielemans’ contract expires in June 2023 and Arsenal could take advantage to sign him for cheap this summer.
