Lo Celso to Aston Villa

Aston Villa is keeping an eye on Giovani Lo Celso’s performances at Villarreal. Lo Celso is on loan at Villarreal from Tottenham Hotspur, a favorite player of Unai Emery, having played for him at Paris Saint-Germain and Villarreal.

The Argentine midfielder’s name was one of the players discussed when Emery considered going to Newcastle United in 2021. Tottenham would be happy to sell as they overhaul their squad.

The 27-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Villarreal, playing a total of 43 matches and scoring twice. He initially joined Spurs on loan in the 2019-20 season before it was made permanent in January of that campaign after he impressed former boss Jose Mourinho. However, Lo Celso’s performances then dipped as he made just 11 Premier League starts the following season. He made two starts in the 2021-22 campaign before being shipped off to Spain midway through the campaign.

Reports in Spain have suggested that Villa is set to make an offer for Lo Celso, with Emery having worked with the former Tottenham player during his time at Villarreal. It wouldn’t be the first time Emery has looked to recruit players from Spain, having signed Alex Moreno from Real Betis in the January transfer window.

Jonas said about Lo Celso, “The turnaround at Aston Villa has been rapid under Emery and their new optimistic outlook is something to be excited about. Lo Celso is being linked and that feels like such a good fit for what this team is starting to become and I have heard before now that we should expect an exciting addition like that to just add new life to the forward patterns. I think he would be a better option than pursuing Nico Williams, who is a good player but still quite inconsistent, and you also have the issue of having to try to get him out of Athletic Club and we should not underestimate that attachment in the Basque Country. He plays in the same team as his brother, and that connection is deep. When Emery first came into Villa we were told that a wide player was his top priority and I think looking at it now and how he has started to evolve the team, Lo Celso just feels like the sort of transfer target that makes sense.”

Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are the six Premier League clubs believed to be in the race to sign Tammy Abraham from AS Roma. According to reports Roma will be listening to offers in the region of £40million. It is also mentioned that the 25-year-old could be willing to make a return to the Premier League.

He has had a mixed time in Italy, managing 36 goals and 12 assists in 102 games for Jose Mourinho’s team. But Chelsea fans would be well aware of the England international’s overall game. Chelsea also have a £67 million buy-back clause inserted into his contract but if Roma want less, perhaps the Blues won’t have to pay that much.
