Unai Emery
Aston Villa have set their sights on Barcelona‘s Clément Lenglet. The French defender who was last seen playing for Tottenham Spurs in the ’22/23 season is now being courted by Unai Emery.
Aston Villa’s aim to purchase a centre-back comes as no surprise. Previously spending £31m on Pau Torres, Villa find themselves bidding for another center-back. An injury for captain Tyrone Mings on opening day has left Unai Emery with only Calum Chambers and Diego Carlos as their substitute CBs. Clément Lenglet who played 26 times for Spurs last season seems to be the perfect back-up for the current Villa side. Tyrone seems to be out for a lengthy amount of time and will require surgery on his knee. With their captain and main center-back out, Lenglet seems like the best short-term response.
It’s clear to Aston Villa fans that this signing is meant for squad-depth reasons. Many fans also believe him to be a better option off the bench than Calum Chambers. With Villa also taking part in the UEFA Conference League, squad depth is a must. Players will be tired as the games will come thick and fast. Man Utd at one point were playing 3 games in one week. If Villa were in the same situation, their players could suffer leading to worse results in each competition. Unai Emery realizes that while his team are capable of great performances, the ability to perform week-in week-out with little to no rest is asking too much.
While Clément Lenglet will not revolutionize their defense, Villa who had only one CB on the bench against Burnely, will be hoping to sign another CB to rotate and rest those who are overplayed.
Aston Villa have been immense under Unai Emery

Unai Emery has brought incredible change to Aston Villa who were suffering under Steven Gerrard. With only 2 wins in 11 games, Villa looked like a team defeated before the game would even kick-off. When Unai Emery was appointed, some fans were hesitant. The manager had a poor stint with Arsenal in his first spell at England. However we have to give the manager respect as he is a 4 time Europa League winner. Fans were wondering how the Spanish manager would handle his second stint.
Like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah, Unai Emery’s second stint in England has been excellent. He completely changed the atmosphere at the club. Early on in his second stint, he beat a United side who were playing impressive football themselves. Completely neutralising the Red Devils, Villa ran out 3-1 winners. A stat was released stating that only the Manchester clubs, Arsenal and Liverpool scored more points in the PL since his appointment by the end of the 22/23 season.
Now in their first European competition since 2011, Emery will be looking to make his mark on the Conference League, already conquering the Europa.
