Aston Villa sack Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard after yet another humiliating loss in the Premier League
After less than a year in charge, and in the wake of Thursday’s 3-0 Premier League loss to Fulham, Aston Villa fired Steven Gerrard. The former Liverpool midfielder, who had already led Rangers to Scottish Premiership victory the season before, was brought in November to replace Dean Smith.
However, the 2022–23 season has gotten off to a terrible start, with Villa sitting barely above the relegation zone on goals scored and just two top-flight victories in 11 games. Before the match against Marco Silva’s Cottagers, Gerrard’s situation was already precarious.
There was no opportunity for a last-minute miracle, though, as they turned in a horror show of performance, giving away a penalty, scoring an own goal, and having a player sent off. “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future,” the club said in a brief statement.

Who will take over the hot seat at Aston Villa following Steven Gerard’s sacking?
Before succeeding Dean Smith as Villa manager in November 2021, Gerrard had previously made an impression with Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership. Long-term injuries have troubled summer arrivals Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara, and the controversy surrounding the club captaincy — Tyrone Mings replaced by John McGinn — has served as an unwelcome off-field distraction.
Michael Beale, Gerrard’s assistant, departed Villa Park in the summer to take the reins at Queens Park Rangers. Since then, he has turned down an offer from Wolves, who will support interim manager Steve Davis until 2023.
