Athletic Club defeated Cadiz 4-0 away from home on Monday night, almost making it a flawless night, but on Tuesday afternoon, Los Leones received some unfavourable news.
Inaki Williams scored the game’s first goal but ultimately had to be replaced after suffering a knock. Williams’ ankle was sprained, and this information was made public today. Williams’ recovery period was not mentioned, nor were there any additional specifics about the severity of the sprain. It does, however, imply that Williams might miss some playing time.
More importantly for Williams personally, it jeopardises his extraordinary streak of 236 straight La Liga appearances. Williams has just five days to recover in enough to play for Athletic Club against Espanyol on Sunday at home. If he were to lose that game, it would be the end of one of the greatest modern streaks of performance and fitness to keep up such consistency. The Ghanaian international scored one goal in the Lions’ 4-0 rout of Cadiz on Monday night at Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla.
Williams, who had just rounded goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma, intercepted Santiago Arzamendia‘s errant backpass in the 24th minute and fired into an open goal. That put an end to his joint-worst La Liga streak of 14 away matches in the country’s top division without scoring.
Eleven minutes later, after Alfonso Espino handled the ball in the penalty box, he had a chance to increase the visitors’ lead, but Ledesma saved his soft penalty. Nevertheless, he was replaced by Gorka Guruzeta in the 54th minute despite statistics showing he had produced five shots, three of which were on goal, and won one aerial duel.
