Aymeric Laporte spoke about the opposition his side faced in the Champions League. It was clear that the Machester City defender did not forget the painful defeat at the hands of Real Madrid last season as he said: “In the Champions League, we face another big team in Real Madrid and we will try to get our revenge from last year.”

Pep Guardiola’s side looked to have sealed a spot in the final of the prestigious competition last year and even had a two-goal lead on aggregate heading into the 90th minute of the second leg. Two clutch goals from Rodrygo in two minutes, however, downed the confidence of the English champions and forced extra time.

Karim Benzema had the pleasure of inflicting the final blow on the night as City collapsed out of the competition. This time, however, the Blues appear to be a rung higher in terms of quality. The addition of Erling Haaland makes them a formidable side in attack, while Kevin De Bruyne’s return from injury gives Guardiola a close-to full-strength squad.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men will thus have to play at their very best if they are to advance to the next round given the fact they have been inconsistent in the past few matches. However, with Vinicius Junior and Eduardo Camavinga back from injury, the Madrid outfit will not make life easy and make sure to fight until the end.

Aymeric Laporte wants to continue winning trophies with Manchester City for ‘as long as he can’, despite finding himself on the fringes of the first team in recent weeks. Laporte has struggled to displace John Stones and Ruben Dias in the center of City’s defense recently, with Manu Akanji and Nathan Ake playing well and making his route to regular games more difficult than ever.

In the past, when Laporte hasn’t played much, he has hinted at wanting to leave the club, and reports have suggested he could look for a summer transfer at the end of the season. The Spain international has started just six of the last 24 games for City when he has been available and has been an unused substitute for 13 of those games – even in the last week when Ake was absent with injury.

Speaking ahead of the final five games of the Premier League season, however, as well as the Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid, Laporte declared his love for City and reinforced his desire to win trophies for the club. “City for me is everything,” he said. “I have only played for two clubs in my career. Athletic Bilbao, the team before City, I love this team too.”
