It isn’t every day that a Lionel Messi free-kick fails to hit the target. The Argentine has built up a reputation for being deadly from set pieces, giving opposition fans nightmares as soon as Inter Miami are fouled from scoring range. However, his most recent attempt against Orlando City didn’t go according to plan. His strike missed the target and ended up hitting a baby in the stands!

The Miami No.10 has an unbelievable 65 free-kick goals to his name. With two goals against Orlando, Messi and co. comfortably saw off Orlando by five goals to none. Luis Suarez also bagged a brace as Miami ran riot of their opponents. Days after Cristiano Ronaldo came under criticism for an obscene gesture, netizens were quick to notice Messi’s off-target shot, which ended up making a baby cry.

A video recorded from the stands shows Messi’s free-kick go up and over the wall before landing in the stands. As the camera focuses on the crowd, it became evident that the ball had hit a young admirer of the Argentine.

The little kid was reduced to tears as the attention shifted to the child. The ball was eventually returned and play resumed within seconds. The World Cup winner is yet to respond or make a statement regarding the incident.

The last thing Lionel Messi would be known for is missing free-kicks. However, Sunday’s game against Orlando City gave rival fans a reason to criticize the Argentine superstar. As his missed free-kick hit a baby, a fan commented, “Hurting minors now“. Messi fans quickly turned the situation around, and claimed that the clip going viral was just Ronaldo fans celebrating something slightly wrong done by the #10.

Another said that the parents were one hundred percent in the wrong for the incident. People watching games being hit by the ball is no new phenomenon. However, one fan opined that Messi couldn’t even score in a league like the MLS. Many fans even said that the baby should consider herself lucky and that it will make for a wonderful story to tell when she’s older.

As for the game itself, Inter Miami gave the home crowd every reason to cheer for, with five goals against a helpless Orlando defense. Lionel Messi put the crowd on it’s toes as his free-kick (different from the one mentioned above) scraped the post. With the emphatic win, Miami remain at the top of the table, with seven points in three games. Messi, with two goals on Saturday, is now at three goals for the season.
