Barcelona coach Xavi Hernadez pushes for major football reform involving match officials
Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez
Barcelona coach Xavi spoke to reporters on Monday to preview his team’s Champions League group stage clash with Inter. The manager spoke about the Serie A side, rumors of a Lionel Messi return and also shared his thoughts on Marcos Alonso.
Barcelona coach Xavi knows what’s at stake for his side when they take on Inter in the Champions League, but he isn’t taking anything for granted despite the Nerazzurri’s recent poor form. The two teams sit level on three points in Group C after both falling to Bayern Munich, making Tuesday’s encounter a key one in deciding who will make it out of the group stage.
Ahead of the big clash, Barca coach Xavi also proposed the idea of referees having to attend press conferences after the matches to discuss critical decisions they gave and the parameters of such decisions. Xavi said: “I think that referees should hold press conferences to explain their decisions. They are very important for football and if they explain their decisions we can understand them better.”
Xavi acknowledges that refereeing isn’t everybody’s piece of cake when it comes to big Champions League clashes and wants more clarity for everybody involved i.e fans and coaches in general. Since football governing bodies have always shielded referees when it comes to post-match confrontation, the implementation of such rules may take longer than expected.

Barcelona manager Xavi also talks about their next Champions League clash against Inter Milan
Inter boss Simone Inzaghi is under pressure with his side ninth in Serie A following back-to-back defeats to Udinese and Roma. But Xavi is not reading anything into the Nerazzurri’s poor form, as he knows they have the quality to turn things around.
“It’s not significant,” he said. “It’s Inter, a very strong team. They have a different system to anything we’ve come across so far. They play with two strikers, something you don’t see too much in Spain. They’re a tough opponent, with good dynamics, but that has to be shown.”
