Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández has publicly made clear his stance on the recent issues spiraling around Spanish Football. “I want to give my unconditional support to Jennifer Hermoso,” spoke Xavi.
The Jenni Hermoso case has united both men’s and women’s football against the misconduct of the Spanish FA and their President Luis Rubiales. Many players have made their thoughts public. Female players from around the world such as Beth Mead and Alex Morgan have publicly spoken out against Rubiales and the Spanish FA.
Their statements are supported by men’s players such as Sergi Roberto, Iker Casillas, and David De Gea being some of them. While some clubs have also come out against the Spanish FA, some remain neutral against the removal of Luis Rubiales.
Xavi made a no-nonsense statement which was to the point. He spoke in support of Jenni Hermoso, condemned the Luis Rubiales’s behavior and is upset that the incident has taken over the achievement of winning a World Cup. A trophy which Xavi also has the luxury of winning, he will know the importance of winning the trophy and the joy it brings.
So it is not a surprise when he is saddened that his female counterparts are unable to enjoy their achievement the same way the men’s team did in 2010. With both players and fans alike calling out his actions. The public will be hoping for a reformation in the Spanish FA with Luis Rubiales’s recent suspension.
Spain’s World Cup
Even before the World Cup began, 15 players had already resigned from the team due to various issues, mainly unprofessionalism. This somehow did not stop Spain from lifting the trophy. La Furia Roja won their first two games in the group stages before being beaten by 2011 Champions, Japan, 4-0. As a result, they had to settle for a second-place finish in the group.
Spain cruised past Switzerland in the Ro16 with a 5-1 victory with 70% of the possession and 26 shots on goal. In the QFs Spain found themselves in extra time against the Netherlands. It took a goal in the 111th minute of the game by 19-year-old, Salma Paralluelo to separate the two sides.
Spain faced Sweden in the semi-finals. An 81st-minute goal by Spain followed by an 88th-minute goal by the Swedes meant that the game would most likely go to extra time. However just a minute after Sweden equalized, Olga Carmona scored an 89th-minute late winner that took Spain to the finals to face Lionesses.
Spain vs. England, showdown finale! Both teams awaiting to lift their first World Cup title. Olga Carmona scored in the 29th minute of the game to give Spain the lead. A missed penalty in the 69th minute for Spain however switched the momentum of the game. England Lionesses were now pushing forward, playing quicker and sharper than before. Shot after shot, cross after cross. But, it was all in vain as the Spaniards held on to just a one-goal lead.
