Ilkay Gundogan joined FC Barcelona on a free transfer from treble winners Manchester City earlier this summer. However, the transfer has not been as simple as La Liga rules might prevent the club from registering him. While Gundogan has already played in a preseason friendly and an el classico for Barcelona, the fans are excited to see him in their midfield.

According to Forbes, it is understood that the club has to register the player before the deadline on Sunday. If not completed with the formalities of the transfer contract, the German maestro could leave the club for free in case the transfer fails. With Barcelona having 13 registered players in their current roster, with Franck Kessie and Ousmane Dembele already among the potential players to leave, the club faces a challenging situation.

Gundogan has been a star performer with his former club on many occasions since he signed for them back in 2016 from Borussia Dortmund. The midfielder helped the club win the league in the last game of the season by scoring two crucial goals against Aston Villa. Having taken his talents to Spain and already gelling in their team and making chemistry, it will be unfortunate if Barcelona eventually fails to register him.

It has also been understood that if the Catalonian club fails to register him, they will have to pay his salaries in full they will have to reimburse him £8.6m per season on a two-year deal which includes an option for a third. With Gundogan having called the move ‘dreamy’ earlier, he hopes to complete the transfer officially without much hassle.

Manchester City completed a maiden UEFA Champions League victory after various failed attempts when they beat Inter Milan in a 1-0 win in Istanbul. Having captained the English club for over three years and officially last year, Ilkay Gundogan had undoubtedly left with a personality to be missed in the dressing room. The Premier League champions have had a legendary captain in Vincent Kompany, and to imagine that Gundogan won their first treble is genuinely remarkable.

Gundogan had also stepped up many times when players like Kevin De Bruyne or David Silva were unavailable to perform. This showed his leadership qualities, ability to perform for the team when most needed, and his humble persona.

Ilkay Gundogan spent seven successful years in Manchester, winning the Premier League five times, accompanied by various domestic trophies. He won it all domestically, from the Community Shield to the FA and Carabao Cup. When he eventually lifted the UCL Trophy, it undoubtedly filled every City fan’s heart with love and respect for him, leaving his void a hard gap to fill.
