Barcelona‘s 2-1 win over Deportivo Alaves saw their Polish forward, Robert Lewandowski end his six-game goal drought. A brace by Lewandowski has ensured Barcelona remain within a hand’s reach of Real Madrid.

After letting in a goal early, the crowd at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys had to wait until the second half to see Barcelona score. Jules Kounde crossed the ball, and Lewandowski headed it in, breaking his six-game goal drought. This was his longest goalless period since 2011. He didn’t stop there, scoring another goal from a Ferran Torres-won penalty, securing three points for Xavi‘s team.

While Lewandowski was going through a rough patch of games, Xavi never doubted the player’s prowess as he spoke about his player’s mental fortitude. In the post-match press conference, the Spanish boss said:

The negativity around the team and the criticism is affecting my players….veterans like Lewandowski and Iñigo aren't affected by it.

He further said that Robert Lewandowski was always there for them.

Robert Lewandowski’s second-half brace was rewarded with a MOTM award which was given to him due to his incredible performance. Now the Polish forward must wait till the end of the month to continue his scoring streak in La Liga when he plays Rayo Vallecano on the 25th of November.

The 35-year-old forward who was signed from Bayern Munich has had a slow start to the new season by his standards. Before the game against Alaves, the player had only managed to score thrice in Barcelona’s last nine La Liga fixtures. With his contract set to expire three years from now, Barcelona fans will worry if the player has already shown signs of regression as Robert Lewandowski now enters the latter stages of his career.
