Barcelona informs Frenkie de Jong he must leave the club against his will after agreeing to £71 million deal with Manchester United: Reports
Frenkie de Jong
Despite Frenkie de Jong’s wishes to stay in Barcelona next season, the Catalan club have informed the Dutch international that he must make his way to England after reaching an agreement of £71 million with Manchester United.
Frenkie de Jong had expressed his desire to play in the Champions League and is also considered an important part of Barcelona manager, Xavi’s set-up. However, Barcelona is aware that they need to sell to free up funds to sign new players.
Barcelona to free up €30-35 million in wages after Frenkie de Jong transfer
Barcelona will receive a huge financial boost once the deal with De Jong is conformed. As per Mundo Deportivo, the club will receive a one-time payment of €65 million and would free up over €30 million in wages for de Jong’s remaining years at the club.
Barcelona recently agreed to a €67 million deal to sign Brazilian winger Raphinha from Leeds United. They are in talks with Chelsea and Bayern Munich to sign multiple players while also owing over €100 million in transfer fees to over 19 clubs.
Selling the 25-year-old not only gives them a huge cash injection but also frees up wages so that the club can register new players. However, they need to convince the midfielder to leave and join Manchester United.
The Red Devils can match his salary at Barcelona but the dutchman’s first wish is to play Champions League, something United are not competing in this season. Hence, that could be a major factor in deciding the player’s future.
Since joining, the former Ajax player has been a regular starter for the club, having played in almost all midfield and sometimes in defensive positions. Making 140 appearances in the last 3 years scoring 13 times and providing another 18 assists.
Frenkie de Jong is the ideal candidate to improve Manchester United’s midfield and was top of the list of players that Eric ten Hag wanted this summer. Having worked with him previously at Ajax, the two Dutchmen could really help United get back to its best.
