Barcelona is the most valuable football club according to Forbes, ends Real Madrid and Manchester United’s duopoly
FC Barcelona
For the first time, Barcelona has topped Forbes’ ranking of the world’s 20 most valuable football clubs, pushing Real Madrid to second place. Real Madrid is valued at $4.75 billion, marginally behind Barcelona at $4.76 billion. For the prior 16 years, two clubs had dominated the top slot, with Real Madrid claiming five times and Manchester United claiming the spot 11 times.
Barcelona’s ascent coincides with the club’s public spat with superstar Lionel Messi, the world’s highest-paid player, who threatened to leave before the end of his contract last year.
Messi stayed put after a months-long cliffhanger, and the team’s president Bartomeu resigned amidst financial turmoil. Eventually, appointing Joan Laporta as the new president wasn’t enough to keep Leo Messi in Barcelona. The 7 times Ballon D’or winner signed with Paris Saint-Germain at the start of this season leaving his boyhood club.
