“Barcelona knows the rules and the responsibilities”- Barcelona can’t pressurise players to play on a pay cut, says La Liga President

Frenkie and Tebas

According to LaLiga president Javier Tebas, Barcelona is free to ask Frenkie De Jong to take a wage cut. De Jong has received a lot of attention regarding a summer transfer to Manchester United.

The Dutch midfielder is eager to remain at Camp Nou, but Barcelona has urged him to accept a pay cut, a request the player has rejected. Tebas argued, however, that players cannot dissociate themselves from “collective agreement” when questioned about the circumstance.

He assured: “The players cannot be split from the team or pressured – it’s what collective agreement, the Law, reason, ethics mark. From there, Barcelona knows the rules and the responsibilities.”

De Jong won’t leave Camp Nou unless Barca pays him back for postponed salaries totaling £17 million.

In order to lessen the club’s financial strain during the COVID-19 epidemic, the 25-year-old agreed to take a wage reduction. Barcelona, though, pledged to repay the money in full during the life of his contract, which is valid until 2026.

Frenkie de Jong to leave or stay in Barcelona?

The Camp Nou team still has to sell a few players before the start of the La Liga season if they are to register their new signings, according to the league president, despite using two economic levers (selling 35% of their audio-visual rights). De Jong is also their best-selling asset.

The manner the Catalan giants have been handling the Dutch international has not pleased many observers, despite the fact that the economic issues may be complex and a subject for La Liga to sort out before the season begins.

The small playmaker reportedly had a choice: help the club sign their new players by assisting with the registration process, or risk being transferred.

The La Liga team is under close scrutiny because of how they handled the 25-year-old. Several people have previously criticized Barcelona’s treatment of De Jong, including former Red Gary Neville, and more and more people are coming out in his defense.
