Barcelona manager Xavi wants Frenkie de Jong to take a 50% pay cut if he wants to stay at the Catalan Club: Reports

According to AS, Barcelona manager Xavi has told Frenkie de Jong that if he wants to stay at the club, he will have to cut his salary by half. De Jong, who is valued at €64 million has been involved in a lengthy transfer saga with Manchester United that has lasted weeks with little progress made by either side.

Barcelona, on the other hand, has told the Netherlands international that he must either take a massive pay cut or risk being shipped out of the club via transfer. In this regard, President Joan Laporta has made some progress. Chelsea may have turned down the chance to sign him, but a fee has been agreed upon with Manchester United. However, the transaction has not progressed.

One of the sticking points has been the money owed to De Jong by Barcelona for deferred wages, but the Catalans are set to increase their demands on the former Ajax man if he is to stay at the club. Indeed, Xavi is said to have told the player that if he wants to stay at Camp Nou, he must take a 50% pay cut.

Following a series of pay cuts accepted by senior members of the squad and the offloading of stars such as Philippe Coutinho, who was on a reported €22 million per year, De Jong is the highest earner left at Barcelona. De Jong is said to earn around €21 million per season.

If Frenkie de Jong accepts Barcelona’s proposal, he will lose up to €42 million in basic wages

With a contract that runs until 2026, Barcelona has effectively asked the Dutch star to forego €42 million over the next four years. If his salary was reduced to around €10.5 million, he would become a middle-ranking player in the club’s pay structure.

Of course, any new contract could be heavily laden with bonus payments, so that if the club achieved success in La Liga or the Champions League, he could earn close to what he is currently receiving as basic pay. Nonetheless, it is a significant sum to ask him to put on the line.
