Ex-Brazilian footballer Dani Alves was removed from the list of FC Barcelona legends, amid the four-year jail sentence for r*pe, that he received last week. The 40-year-old was convicted of s*xually assaulting a 23-year-old woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022.
The ex-Barcelona right-back was found guilty of r*pe last week, receiving a four-and-a-half-year jail term and nine years of probation. He was also directed to pay €9,000 in damages to the victim while receiving a restraining order from a Spanish court. Alves’ legal team has expressed their plan to appeal against the judgment. The full-back was convicted after being held in custody for more than a year, since his arrest in January 2023.
FC Barcelona has reacted to Alves’ conviction by removing his name from its list of club legends. The list features a total of 102 players, including his former teammates Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, and Andres Iniesta. This action highlighted the club’s decision not to endorse individuals with such serious legal issues as role models. Moreover, Dani Alves’ exclusion from the iconic list reflects a growing trend of accountability in football.
The former Sau Paulo star had enjoyed an incredible career at the Catalan club, scoring 22 goals in 408 appearances throughout nine seasons. Additionally, he was a pivotal part of the club’s six La Liga and three UCL triumphs between 2008 and 2016.
