If Barcelona does not sign Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie before their La Liga debut against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, they may both become free agents. Christensen and Kessie joined Barca on free transfers after leaving Chelsea and AC Milan, respectively, at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

However, neither has been formally registered with La Liga due to the club’s ongoing, widely reported financial difficulties. Lionel Messi was forced to leave Bacça in 2021 due to an alarming annual tradition, and the club still needs to make room within its strict salary cap.

The rules of La Liga ensure that clubs are not permitted to spend more on player salaries than they can afford, which is essentially club revenue less other operational expenses and debt repayments. Over the past few years, those restrictions have consistently reduced Barcelona’s ability to spend.

Barca won’t be able to register the contracts reached with Christensen or Kessie unless they can reduce spending or raise more money. Additionally, according to a recent ESPN report, if they are left unregistered, each player would have the option of quitting.

Can Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha also walk away from Barcelona if non registered with La Liga before deadline?

Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski haven’t had deals registered with La Liga either, but because they weren’t free agents when they arrived, so they don’t have the same freedom to leave. Sergi Roberto and Ousmane Dembele’s new contracts with Barca have not yet been registered.

Although the Blaugrana are anticipated to continue attempting to negotiate with the Christensen and Kessie camps to avoid such a drastic split if the first deadline is missed, President Joan Laporta is said to remain optimistic that all seven deals will be registered in time. In the end, Barca still has three weeks before the transfer window closes to officially register every new signing.
