Barcelona won’t offer returning hero Dani Alves a new contract

Despite Dani Alves wanting to stay at Barcelona, the Brazilian has ended his second spell with the club after the Catalan giants informed him on Wednesday morning that they will not present him with a new contract.
The 39-year-old Brazilian joined the club in November of 2021 on a free and was a key part of the initial resurgence of Barcelona under Xavi Hernandez. In total he made 16 appearances, scoring once and assisting 3 goals on his return to the club after six years away.
Alves was praised by Xavi for his professionalism and leadership skills, moreover, the defender started training in November under the orders of the Catalan coach in order to be fully fit by January and played a leading role in the squad, but it appears the club have decided they have better options at right-back for next season.
The signing of Dani Alves in the winter was more than just a sporting decision. The club was looking for the Brazilian to provide the youngsters with experience and to lift an already depressed dressing room but is now considered surplus to requirement at the age of 39.
Why is Dani Alves’ contract not being renewed by Barcelona?

The economic situation at the Blaugrana and the likely signing of César Azpilicueta have caused the club to decide against offering Alves a new deal. It is expected that Oscar Mingueza will leave this summer, but following the renewal of Sergi Roberto, Barcelona already have a backup for Sergino Dest. Whether there is further movement including additions or the departure of Dest remains to be seen.
This will be a blow to Alves’ chief ambition which was to play the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November. He has been included in Brazil’s most recent call-up but will now have to find a club willing to give him minutes in the lead-up to November’s Qatar World Cup.
