FC Barcelona went into Matchday 4 with assured qualification, given they avoided defeat against a not-so-threatening Shakhtar Donetsk side. However, as the Blaugrana made their visit to Volksparkstadion, Xavi’s side struggled against a threatening Shakhtar side. Barcà fell 1-0 to the home side on a night in which the visitors managed to register just one shot on target.
The first half was a tough contest between either side, as Barcelona dominated possession while failing to create meaningful chances. A poor display which many dubbed as ‘the worst 45 minutes Barca have played all season’ saw Barca go behind just before half-time. Danylo Sikan‘s leaping header eluded Ter Stegen’s reach as he met Giorgi Gocholeishvili’s cross at the edge of the box.
The loss evoked fam outrage as the supporters expected a positive response after an unconvincing display against Real Sociedad earlier on Sunday. Many blamed the players for their lack of spirit, while others pointed their fingers at Xavi Hernandez and his technical staff.
The lack of chances created by the team, and just one shot on target called for criticism for the forwards as well.
Fans react to Barcelona’s ‘poor display’ in the Champions League
Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the Champions League group stage against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Spanish giants failed to secure mathematical qualification for the Round of 16 early on, though the loss may not impact their chances to qualify. “Xavi and his technical team are so poor at calculating games,” said a disappointed fan. Trolls poured in, with one comment reading, “They headed to Europa this time as well.”
Here are some of the fans’ reactions:
Some of the criticism was aimed at Robert Lewandowski, with a comment saying, “Lewa adds nothing to this attack.” Some of the other comments by unconvinced fans read they want Xavi out. “I am lost…I need a drink,” said a fan pointing to this “unbearable performance.” Barca, however, remain top of their Champions League group despite their loss.
