Manchester City took a huge step towards the Champions League semi-finals as they beat Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Etihad. Both sides went in search of the opening goal early on, with Erling Haaland and Jamal Musiala both going close.
It was Rodri who broke the deadlock with a stunning strike in the 27th minute. He picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and cut inside onto his weaker foot and curled the ball into the top corner. Although there were a few more chances in the first half, the score remained 1-0 until the end of the first 45 minutes.
Bayern started the second half strongly with Leroy Sane testing Ederson on multiple occasions. But City held firm. And then they punished the visitors for some sloppy defending as Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland found the net in the 70th and 76th minute respectively.
It leaves Bayern Munich, with a mountain to climb in Munich next week. And Pep Guardiola’s side is firmly on course to lift the Champions League for the first time. The second leg takes place in Munich on Wednesday, April 19.
