Bayer Leverkusen have well and truly arrived. The German league leaders made a bold announcement to the league as well as European football with a win against defending champions Bayern Munich on Saturday. Xabi Alonso‘s side gave Bayern no chance as the final score read 3-0 against their favor. In the wake of the ‘shocking’ defeat, Bayern legend Thomas Muller was frustrated to say the least.

Bayern Munich have made a habit of winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles. However, the 2023/24 season may prove to be a monumental year for the league, as Bayer Leverkusen offer a more-than-significant chance of beating the Bavarians to the trophy. Following the game, Thomas Muller appeared to be heavily frustrated and disappointed with the result.

You can see some symptoms on the pitch. I'm frustrated. The team is much braver in training. We lack courage. I have to quote Oliver Khan here. We're too caught up in our heads. It's okay to feel pressure, but we need to show energy on the pitch. We have no freedom.

Following the unexpected loss, Bayern Munich are now 5 points behind Xabi Alonso and co., putting them in an unfamiliar position of not being favorites to lift this years Bundesliga title.

Harry Kane fails to shine as Bayer Leverkusen take ‘big’ step towards Bundesliga title

Football Twitter hasn’t been the same since Bayern Munich’s unexpected loss. The 3-0 defeat was enough for fans to have a go at the defending Bundesliga champions. While Leverkusen attackers ran riot through the Bayern defense, Bayern striker Harry Kane was somehow the opposite. The Englishman failed to deceive his audience, as he painted a lonely picture up top for his club.

A surprising stat for the #9 showed that he only managed to make seven touches in the first half. The number was the lowest for any player on the pitch. He also failed to make a single touch in the opposition box during the time. His ‘meagre’ 18 touches and zero shots on target called for harsh criticism on social media. Leroy Sane ‘punching’ the camera set up in goal summed up the Bayern attack’s performance on the night.

As for the hosts, goals from Josip Stanisic, Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong ensured a comfortable win on home soil. With Alonso linked to the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid, a Bundesliga title in his first full season will send a strong message to any team that wants him. Celebrations after the emphatic win echoed praise for the manager and coaching staff alike.
