Bayern Munich CEO breaks silence on hefty price of Victor Osimhen, says it would be a ‘big risk

Oliver Kahn does not believe in the 150 million price tag for Victor Osimhen.

Oliver Kahn claims that it will amount to a risky move for the Bavarians to sign Nigeria international Victor Osimhen for €150m despite his impressive performance in Serie A. The Nigerian striker has had the best season of his career and powered Napoli to their first historic Scudetto after 33 years to become the first Nigerian player to win the Serie A title.

The German champions have been on the radar for the Napoli prolific goal-poacher in a bid to get his signature in the summer, for the Bayern star believes the price tag on Osimhen is too high and notes that the player is not worth the mega fee. “When it’s about such a fee, we have to ask the question, does the player give you a guarantee for this money?” Kahn said.“That would definitely be a big risk.”

Meanwhile, Napoli owner, Aurelio de Laurentiis, has assured Gli Azzurri fans that he has no intention of selling Osimhen this summer. Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani have also been linked with moves to Munich in recent months. “No comment on Harry Kane. I won’t say anything about players who’re not our players. Kolo Muani? Same. I don’t want to talk about players from other clubs. But we’re assessing the striker market,” the CEO added.

Bayern Munich, despite being the top-scoring team and being top of the Bundesliga hasn’t dominated the German division in recent years. They have looked vulnerable at times in the No.9 position lacking quality options after the departure of their Polish frontman. They have crashed out of the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League and look vulnerable to going trophyless unless they overturn results in Bundesliga.

Oliver Kahn revealed that, before City took Erling Haaland to the Etihad Stadium, Bayern tried to sign him. However, his high salary made Bayern pull the brakes. “We had to decide whether or not to break our wage structure, but Bayern is not like that,” said the club’s general manager. In the end, the Norwegian chose Manchester City as his destination where he is breaking individual records.

Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn admitted, in case anyone had any doubts, that his club was among those interested in the Norwegian before City won the deal. “We tried everything to sign Erling Haaland a year ago and we reached our financial limits,” he said.” The club had to decide whether or not to break our wage structure. We were not prepared for it, Bayern is not like that,” he said.

The Munich club did not want to offer him a higher salary than the other players and, in the end, the opportunity for Haaland to replace Robert Lewandowski slipped away. The Bavarians have lacked a clinical presence since crashing out of European competitions and the German Cup. They will assess the transfer market for a world-class striker for sure next season.
