Bayern Munich legend set to announce his retirement amidst recurring knee problems
According to reports, Franck Ribery will soon declare his retirement from football. The 39-year-old former Bayern Munich player, who has been out for Salernitana since August due to knee issues, has opted to end his illustrious career. During his career in Germany, Ribery won nine Bundesliga titles and a Champions League while playing for Bayern between 2007 and 2019.
According to L’Equipe, the French winger experienced recurring cartilage issues and developing aches in his knees despite having initially planned to play into his 40s. Against Roma in August, Ribery made his last appearance in professional football during a brief cameo in the second half. He wore the captain’s armband during Salernitana’s 2-0 Coppa Italia loss to Parma seven days earlier.
Ribery joined Fiorentina three years ago after quitting the German top division, and in 2021 he joined the rival Serie A team. Last season, as the freshly promoted team launched an unexpected survival attempt, the Frenchman assisted Salernitana in avoiding relegation.
Until the end of the season, he will continue to serve as the club’s ambassador. At Bayern, Ribery carved out a successful career on the left flank, compiling 103 assists in the Bundesliga in just 273 appearances. Only former teammate Thomas Muller has more assists overall in the Bundesliga than his remarkable total.
French winger Frank Ribery is a certified Bayern Munich legend
Ribery has appeared 23 times for Salernitana since his move in 2021 and registered three assists. After his retirement, the French international is expected to remain at the club for this season as their ambassador. With the European juggernauts Bayern Munich, the winger also won six German Cups and the Club World Cup in 2014.
The former Marseille man recorded 425 appearances for Bayern Munich and scored 124 goals and made 182 assists for the club. In 2012-13 season, Ribery was nominated alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the three-man shortlist for the 2013 Ballon d’Or award as Bayern Munich won the treble.
