Bayern Munich’s ‘worst’ nightmare is a reality. The defending Bundesliga champions are 13 points behind Xabi Alonso‘s Bayer Leverkusen and with just seven games to go, it isn’t difficult to see who will lift the title. Had someone claimed that the Bayern manager would give up all hope of securing the title at this point in the season, no one would have believed them.

Yet, Thomas Tuchel is convinced that Leverkusen are lifting this year’s League title, thereby ending a run of 11 consecutive seasons on top. While it was difficult to picture Alonso’s men dropping ten points in the remaining few games, Bayern’s unexpected loss to Borussia Dortmund saw them fall behind the table toppers even more. As Leverkusen show no signs of stopping, it is all but confirmed that Bayern’s dominance in the Bundesliga is coming to an abrupt end.

The game against Dortmund saw the Bavarians lose 2-0 as goals from Karim Adeyemi and Julian Ryerson sealed the deal for the visitors. Surprisingly, the loss also ended a ten-year-old record held by Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich effectively put an end to their title hopes as they failed to muster a win against rivals Borussia Dortmund. Despite being unbeaten against them since 2014 at the Allianz Arena, Saturday’s game saw Dortmund put an end to the same. Karim Adeyemi and Julian Ryerson scored the goals for the visitors as Bayern failed to answer back.

Following the embarrassing defeat, Joshua Kimmich did not hold back from censuring his team’s performance. 

I wonder how we can put in such a performance in a game like this. It's inexplicable and felt like a friendly game in the second half. We players should go home and question ourselves.

Despite enjoying the majority of possession and shots taken, the hosts failed to come out on top in the most important statistic – goals. After being part of Bayern’s last eight Bundesliga triumphs, the end of this season will surely stick out like a sore thumb for months to come. Despite their boss Thomas Tuchel conceding defeat to Leverkusen after the game, they still have the UEFA Champions League to fight for.
