“What a clown; That’s mad”- Bayern’s Thomas Tuchel faces rage on social media after benching Joao Cancelo in UCL tie against Manchester City

Joao Cancelo remains out of favour at Bayern Munich after being benched by Thomas Tuchel in their crucial Champions League tie versus Manchester City. It has been a difficult few months for the Portuguese, who joined from City after being dissatisfied with game time.

He was one of Manchester City’s most important players only six months ago, and his long-term future at the club appeared to be secure after signing a contract extension until 2027. His short-term future, however, is uncertain. Cancelo’s days at the Etihad Stadium have appeared numbered since Pep Guardiola sanctioned his loan move to Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day at the end of January.

It’s also unclear whether he has a future at Bayern after a stop-start stint with the club. Former coach Julian Nagelsmann and new manager Thomas Tuchel have both left him out of crucial games. Questions about his attitude have been raised after Guardiola’s eagerness to part ways with him. Joao Cancelo now has no clear destination, and a £62 million price tag on his head.

Despite his struggles to get into the starting lineup, Tuchel brushed away rumours of Cancelo not being in his plans. “I love Joao Cancelo. He has the absolute highest quality, left foot, right foot, passing. I’m more than happy that he’s here. We will need him. I’m convinced he can play at a top level for us”.

Fans react to Joao Cancelo being benched

According to sources, Bayern Munich is not interested in triggering the €70 million buyout clause in the loan agreement to sign the player permanently. Spanish giants Barcelona are reportedly interested in Cancelo due to a lack of natural full-backs. However, they can only afford a loan deal. As per multiple sources, Manchester City wants to sell Cancelo. However, given the financial might of the Premier League, they might have to sell to their direct rivals. Newcastle United could do with a left-back, with Manchester United in the market for a right-back. A Todd Boehly bid can never be ruled out despite Chelsea’s strength in defence. City will undoubtedly be wary of selling to teams around them after Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus’ success at Arsenal.
