“We are also too old up front”- Belgian defender backs Kevin de Bruyne’s remarks regarding Belgium at 2022 FIFA World Cup
Jan Vertonghen reacts to Belgium team-mate Kevin De Bruyne's comments
The veteran defender Jan Vertonghen discussed Belgium’s shocking 2-0 loss to Morocco on Sunday and he appeared to condemn teammate Kevin De Bruyne and draw attention to frictions inside the national team’s World Cup tent. Just before the game, the age of Belgium’s team was a hot topic. Many felt that with so many players on the losing end of 30, the current team had lost its chance to accomplish anything.
Additionally, the team’s best player’s remarks following their performance against Canada’s challenges did little to lessen any potential strain. De Bruyne wrote off Belgium’s likelihood of triumph in an interview posted by the Guardian on Saturday, a day before the pivotal World Cup group game saying that the squad is ‘aging’.
Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen seems to have subtly poked fun at his international teammate after Kevin De Bruyne made some dubious remarks before the European giants 2-0 loss to Morocco. Belgium’s upcoming game against Croatia, which they absolutely must win, will determine whether or not they advance to the World Cup’s round of 16.
Vertonghen, a centre-back, spoke to the media following the loss as reported by the Daily Mail UK: “I guess we attack badly because we are also too old up front.” The comments make for interesting reading, but it seems as if they are a reference to remarks made by De Bruyne before their second group stage clash.
Morocco beat Belgium 2-0 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Group F Match
In their second Group F match on Sunday at the Al Thumama stadium, Morocco surprised World No. 2 Belgium 2-0, adding yet another major upset to the World Cup of Surprises in Qatar. Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal, two substitutes, each netted a goal to grant the North African team a significant boost in their quest to advance to the FIFA World Cup 2022 knockout round.
After two games, Morocco leads the group leaderboard with four points, in front of Belgium, who is in second place with three points after their first World Cup triumph in 24 years. Belgium had more of the ball, but the Moroccans were more dangerous ahead of goal. Morocco was rejected a goal when VAR overturned Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick goal in the final kick of the first half. However, Sabiri gave them the lead with an equivalent goal in the 73rd minute, and Aboukhlal’s goal in stoppage time put an end to the match.
